  • Deciphering hop naming

Generally, hops are named "[Region] [Variety]" as in "East Kent Goldings" or "Hallertauer Mittlefruh". I just received some "Hallertau Spalter Select" (woohoo!). What kind of hops do I have and where were they grown???

I'm not a hop expert, but my understanding is the Hallertau is the primary hop-growing region in Das Faterland, the Spalt(er) Select is the variety. That's why you see Hallertau: Tradition, Mittelfrueh, Hersbrucker, Magnum and even Northern Brewer. Spalt Select is a (newer) disease resistant cultivar of Spalt. German noble aroma. Hope that helps!

That's sorta what I was assuming as well, and for the same reasons. The confusing part is that Spalt (Like Hallertau) is both a variety and a growing region, so I wasn't sure if I had Hallertau grown in Spalt, Select grown in hallertau and/or Spalt, etc.

If no one clues me in otherwise, I'm going to assume I have "Spalter Select" hops from Hallertau.

        hops

You are correct. Another example is Hallertauer Hallertauer i.e. Hallertauer hops grown in the Hallertau.

          "German Select"

Hopunion was selling German Select recently (although not anymore).

That is likely what you have. From the 2003 version of the Hopunion 'Hop Variety Characteristics' Booklet, here are excerpts from the description on p. 56:

          "GR SELECT"

Pedigree: Bred from Hallertau Mittelfruh and Spalt as a disease resistant Spalt type. Originated from Hull Research Institution.

Aroma: Very fine Spalter type aroma

          Alpha Acids: 4-6%

          Beta Acids: 3.5 - 4.5%

          Co-Humulone: 21-25% of alpha acids

          Storageability: Good

          Total Oil: 0.5 - 1.0 mls/100 grams

General Trade Perception: Too early for general consensus but bred to be like the Spalt/Tettnang/Saaz group

Possible Substitutions: US Saaz, US Tettnang, German Spalt, German Tettnang, German Hersbrucker

Released in 1991. Thus, fairly new for a German variety.

              Thanks, David!

Not sure what took so long. I figured I might just as well.

              Cheers!
