  • neutralizing PH of wastewater discharge

Operating a 7BBL brewpub, is it safe to mix the spent alkaline detergent with spent acid rinse to neutralize the discharge PH?

For example mixing a product like PBW with Star San.

Is this safe practice? Will it neutralize the PH?

What chemical interactions should I look out for in these types of products which would be potentially hazardous?

    Thanks

I am not familiar with these materials as we don't use them in the UK. However, what you are suggesting is quite commonly used, albeit neutralisation takes place using raw caustic or cheap bulk acid in a mixing chamber at the effluent pretreatment works. So I don't think there will be a problem, but you really shold check with your supplier before going ahead - just in case

One particlar problem I can think of is if you are using chlorinated caustic compounds. Addition of acid may release chlorine gas !! (been there, got the Tee shirt...., - not good news)
