  • Using silica gel and isinglass for filtering canned beer?

    Hello everyone,

I was curious to see if anyone out there uses silica gel and isinglass as primary filtration aids in a production setting. I used to work at a brewpub where we used both in house and did not filter the beer any further. We got great clarity and stability for the most part. We also never packaged our beer, strickly draft/ growlers.

Any insight will be greatly appreciated

Using isinglass and silica gel can give excellent clarity without the need for further filtration. An effective conditioning/maturation regime (time & temperature) are also major contributors to obtaining decent clarity without filtration.

Producing for draft/take-home means you weren't needing to be concerned with extended stability factors that bottling requires, like aged-related haze formation, sterility, oxygen control and so forth.

Nevertheless, you need to be starting with good wort - which is the source of most/all non-micro haze formers; otherwise no amount of isinglass or other process aids will give you a good final product.

So clearly (pun fully intended ) this must have been of good quality!
