  • $'s for spent grain

What are breweries getting for spent grain these days? We were selling ours to a local cattle farmer for .02 per lb (based on the dry grain bill) but he sold all of his stock and we need to find a new one. Thought I would check in and see what other breweries are getting for their spent grain before I made arrangements with the next farmer. Thanks.

We give ours away to a pig farmer in exchange for a free pig twice a year. Then we throw a big party for our regulars. About time to do that again!

I give our spent grain to local farmer/ranchers. We've gotten everything from pork meat to goat milk to eggs in exchange.
Most of all I've gotten RID OF THE SPENT GRAIN!!!

I always rely on the farmer picking up, rather than dropping the spent grain off.
Saves me time, but I never had the opportunity to charge the farmer. In fact, the brewpubs in and around Boston ALL pay to have the grain picked up. I remember back several years ago, it was costing about $100 per month.

Personally I'm just happy to be able to give it away for free, otherwise it's just garbage that needs to be dumped.

Though one of the pubs selling our beer has begun to request a couple of kilos to make bread, which is nice. Only a tiny percentage of the overall spent grain though.

Looks like we've been lucky to get some compensation for our grain. I can see giving it away or paying for disposal if you are in the city and it is a total pita to get rid of it, but fortunately for us we have some local farmers that view it as an organic/green thing that adds value to their product. Just need to find another one!

              spent grain

              Hi Brewers:

Great that some Brewers get something in exchange for the spent grain.
I would (and did) give the spent grain away, FREE.................
At least that way I was sure the spent grain pick up happened.
Better than having the sticky, stinking stuff sitting around for days.

For the Farmer is sometimes cheaper to drive several hours (more than coming to the Brewery) to pick up the left over of corn mashing for ethanol
              production.

              Cheers
              Fred
