  • Employee/Brewer discount

Just wondering what kind of discounts most brewpubs or small packaging breweries give their employees and brewers. We are set to produce about 650bbls in our first year and this has been an issue brought up by many employees at meeting lately. Also wondering what kind of discounts head brewer/asst. brewers get. We do give all employees $5 toward a "shift beer" but this is more like discounts on 1/6 bbls.

    Thanks,
    Sean

We sell kegs and cases at wholesale prices. There are usually plenty of low-fill cases to go around.

As a Brewpub Brewer I'm used to:
      Free shift meal- lunch
Free beer- but i dont drink during work.
Same discounts given other off-duty employees. Usually 25% off food.
And if you want me to wear your t-shirt, dont expect me to buy them. At the very least sell them at cost.
Shift drinks for waitstaff- every place Ive worked tried to do this but ended it- they are usually a younger crowd who tends to abuse the privilege.

Do as i say, not as i do- just dont work.

50% across the board for Brewers/Managers
        25% across the board for FOH/BOH non-management

I pay for ALL of my beer at the bar (50%) - Not doing this in a Lead By Example manner can cause many problems down the road esp. once staff realizes how they can manipulate your POS system (YES, they ALL have holes in them somewhere). In order to properly enforce "everyone pays for beer" it needs to be so. Even if you give certain employees a house tab, larger discount you should not let staff think anyone drinks for free.... even if they do, make sure it is always rung in somehow.

3 drink MAX @ the bar- it only takes one jackass to get too drunk and start a fight, wreck their car, fall down the steps into the host stand and leave on a strecher.... etc. you get the idea.

If you do not have a good inventory and waste management (at the tap) in place is easy to get robbed blind in this industry if you have the wrong group of people working for you.

Like lhall said, it would be unusual if there weren't enough low-fill/damaged beers to keep the staff happy. We're a pub/packaging operation on about your scale and all our employees get 50% off food and drink at the bar. If anyone (myself included) wants to buy kegs out the door it's at wholesale.

Beer is like porn. You can buy it, but it's more fun to make your own.
