  • Auto shutoff for Chiller

Is there anything that can be installed on a Glycol Chiller that would shut down the recirc pump in the event that the Glycol temp rises above a certain set point? Im thinking in case of compressor failure it would shut off the recirc to keep the tanks from heating up. I've had the compressor go down in the summer which is bad enough, but then the problem is compounded by the pump recircing warm glycol and heating up all the tanks. It would be much less of a PITA if the pump would shut off at a certain point and the tanks would at least maintain lower temps for a while longer.

It is pretty easy to install a dedicated T-Stat that monitors the glycol temperature that simply opened (shut off the pump) and closed (turned the pump back on) based on temperature settings. This will only work on a chiller system with dual pumps; one pump dedicated to circulate to the brewery and one dedicated to circulate internally. Shutting off the pump that circulates to your chiller evaporator is risky and isn't recommended.

To interlock the pump to shut off in the event of a system alarm is a challenge, there are just too numerous alarms (Low Pressure Freeze, Flow Alarm, Head Pressure, Motor Fault, etc). It would be challenging to interlock with each of these different alarms. Installing a dedicated T-Stat would be the simplest and probably provide the best protection.

Give us a call and we can help to get this figured out, or it might be something you or your service contractor can provide.

    Good Luck,
