how are people cleaning and sanitizing growlers when swapping them out for refills?

Cheers,

this has always been a big headache in every brewery I have worked in.

two very important things.

your customers understand that they should be cleaning and rinsing these things before bringing them back for a re-fill.
... then we can just do a quick sanitize using a pump sprayer like you see on top of the bottle trees like this...

or a sparger like more beers...

Other than that, if they come back dirty, soak em in a deep sink with several others, rinse and repeat.

Your the chem people, got any suggestions?

None of the breweries around here clean or sanitize them. Customers must bring them in clean and ready to fill.

We have a three-sink system for glass washing and the final sink is filled with Star San. We give the growlers a rinse with the Star San. This also cools them off so they foam less.
