  • who pays state excise tax?

A question for all of you in probrewerland:

Our in-state (MT) wholesalers pay our state excise taxes on our beer that they sell. I am under the impression that this is common practice in Montana.

My wife's cousin who is a craft/import guy in Minnesota says the brewer, not the wholesaler, pays state excise tax there.

I was wondering what the common practices are out there, particularly in the upper midwest - the Dakotas, Mnnesota, Wisconsin.

    Thanks,

    Sam

WI. You as a brewer pay the excise tax on your beer.

Idaho brewers pay excise tax of 15 cents for < 5% ABV - 45 cents per gallon for > 5% ABV.

In Texas, the person who sells the beer to the retailer pays the excise tax (which can be the brewer or the distributor). For brewpubs, they pay the excise tax.

In Louisiana the brewery pays $10 per bbl to the state. By far my favorite task to do every month.
