  • Considerations of a septic system

I'm looking at a building for a brewpub which is miles away from municipal water and sewer. Does anyone have advice on using a septic system, warnings, precautions, scary stories?

I'm still just looking, but I'd like to hear the good and the bad. Thanks.

    Drain Field

I believe there may be some specific discussions on the forum elsewhere so please check about that.
I don't have specific experience with a brew house application, but formerly dealt with a system which caught effluent from a small commercial laundry.
We had to replace the entire system as the original was undersized for the demand and became totally saturated.
I don't believe you can expect any bio activity in such a system as was ours, and so it essentially becomes a large " grey water " drain field after a series of tanks that are put in to catch solids. These tanks have to be pumped out periodically. The most critical matter is to over size the entire beyond what you think you are going to need and have some type of redundancy.....such as 2 drainfields and 2 tank systems.

Nothing may be built over a drain or leech field. We had some switching valves between different drain fields.

There are engineers that are specialized in waste water matters that will most likely have some solid information.
