  • glycol system problems

    Hi all,

We have been having problems with the solenoids staying open on our glycol system. We have a copper pipe header, with Asco Red Hat solenoid valves, using a 30% solution of Dowfrost propylene glycol. We keep finding little flakes of green specs in the solenoid valves that keep them from closing.

We recently cut into the header pipes and found a heavy buildup of flakey green scale. I assume it is some kind of copper corrosion. I've checked the pH of the glycol, it's at about 8.0 pH and at the proper concentration.

Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do about it?

    Cheers,

Have had the same problem. Now installed an 100 mircon screen filter on the discharge of the chiller. If not needed, we can bypass the filter. No problems since.
Glycol solution seems a little low. A little higher concentration, 35~50% might help with the corrision. (if the Glycol has corrsion inhibitors)

we recently installed red hat valve too. the instructions said they could be mounted in any position, but they reccomended a horozontal mount for best results. 5 out of 6 tanks have horo. mounted valves, the one valve mounted vertically never quite closes....nearly wrecked an ale ferment when we used it the first time.

Also for mesh strainers check out this very affordable one from grainger
