So what's everyone thoughts on using corny kegs instead of sanke's to keg off the last 1/2bbl or so from bright/serving tanks in a small brewpub? We would be serving beer from 4 bright tanks and will not be distributing kegs outside of the brewpub. Going with corny kegs would save us from having to purchase an expensive sanke keg washer. We would probably use this instead as our keg cleaner/sanitizer http://www.kegwasher.com/. Any brewpubs out there using corny's to keg off the last from a bright tank? Any pros or cons to this set up?

Thanks in advance for your advance!

A couple of thoughts for you here. We started with a 1bbl system and 1/2 bbl corny kegs to serve from. That lasted a few months and we quickly outgrew it which is fine since it is our BOP system. The corny kegs themselves can be a bit of an issue since they are prone to leaks from the many seals. It sounds like you will just be kegging off the remains of a batch from your serving tank presumably to free it up early for the next batch. I don't see a big issue with that, but using them for a whole batch could be problematic and labor intensive depending on the total volume.

Yes, we would just be kegging off the last 15-20 gallons in order to free up the bright tank for cleaning and refilling with the next batch. We would be brewing 7 bbl batches with two 7 bbl fermenters and four 7 bbl bright tanks in a walk in cooler. What did you use to clean/santize your corny kegs when you were using them? Thanks!

As far as cleaning we had a keg washer that had a heated tank, it had a wand and a sprayball as well as two connectors for the posts. It also had another wand and connectors for rinse. We rinsed, then hot caustic, then rinse then PAA or Iodophor to sanitize. Worked fine. We have since switched to all sanke kegs for the BOP, Pub and distribution.

Sounds like a decent temporary fix.

As sales pick up and you don't need to empty the BT early, you can use them to try new ingredients or play with dry hops, etc. They're also great for festivals!

I wouldn't buy that keg washer. Either put it together yourself or clean the kegs alongside your brewing equipment. You can make up a fresh batch of star san in the keg, put a few psi on it, shake, then store until needed.
