    Position Summary:
    Our mid-sized craft brewery in NE Portland, Oregon, the Portland Brewing Co, is seeking an experienced Maintenance Manager, preferably within the beverage industry. Our current Maintenance Manager will be retiring after 21 years of service.

    The Maintenance Manager leads the maintenance team and works directly with operations to ensure the safe, efficient and reliable operation of the 50k sq ft facility. This is a “hands on” working manager who will spend at least half of their time on the production floor insuring everything is operating and downtime is minimal.

    The Maintenance Manager also develops and implements maintenance strategies and improvement initiatives. This position directs the planning, construction, maintenance and alteration of equipment and machinery in the facility.

    Education & Experience:
    • Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) in Engineering or related field preferred
    • Minimum of Five (5) years Maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment
    • Previous experience in a beverage or food manufacturing facility a must
    • Experience within a brewery or knowledge of the beer making process a strong plus
    • Management experience a must

    Required Skills:
    • Experienced and thorough understanding of manufacturing practices including but not limited to high volume manufacturing/packaging/production systems and equipment, processes, materials flow and organizational requirements
    • Must have a high level of understanding in all industrial mechanical concepts including but not limited to, fluid transfer, pneumatics, PLC troubleshooting, electrical, machinery operations, welding, packaging machines, etc.
    • Possess in-depth knowledge in repairs and maintenance of processing equipment and systems (preferably within a beverage manufacturing facility)
    • Prior experience using computerized maintenance software, Microsoft Office applications and PLC (programmable logic controls)
    • Basic electrical knowledge
    • Welding experience
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, procedures manuals, operating and maintenance instructions, blueprints, schematics and equipment manuals
    • Prior experience with FDA regulations, anhydrous ammonia refrigeration systems, glycol refrigeration systems, OSHA, HACCP, and GMPs. Hazmat certification a plus.
    • Ability to gather and analyze all types of data, identify the appropriate relationships between the different data, anticipate business directions and make fact based decisions; Exhibits strong judgment and decision-making skills
    • Strong sense of urgency with the ability to prioritize and successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines
    • Ability to adapt and thrive in an environment with changing organizational needs
    • Ability to lead others through change
    • Ability to select, coach, engage and retain a team of employees
    • Excellent interpersonal, as well as strong written and oral communications skills, able to establish trust and credibility with the facility’s diverse team members
    • Ability to manage conflicting priorities and set performance expectations
    • Skilled in organization, prioritization and attention to detail
    • Experience working closely with a safety committee
    • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures
    • Valid driver’s license

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
    • This position is responsible for managing the preventative/predictive/corrective maintenance systems to optimize equipment reliability, prioritizing maintenance requests, overseeing maintenance inventory management and ensuring cost effective maintenance services.
    • He/she is responsible for having a firm knowledge of the plant’s layout, systems and equipment. Plan and execute strategic plans encompassing use of space, facilities infrastructure, and equipment to accomplish controlled and profitable growth, meeting quality and service objectives
    • Work with operations to plan, budget, and oversee execution of facility repairs, modifications, installations and capital improvements
    • Tracks, analyzes and improves key maintenance parameters such as asset utilization, maintenance costs, and PM compliance.
    • Maintains a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) for tracking work orders, spare parts, and maintenance history of plant equipment
    • Reviews the operation of plant equipment and systems to minimize unplanned downtime, solve problems in a timely manner, and to identify opportunities for improvement
    • Inspect machines and equipment for hazards, operating efficiency, malfunctions, wear, and leaks
    • Performs upgrades and/or changes to equipment if necessary
    • Equipment and machinery in the facility include but are not limited to:
    o Glycol cooling systems
    o EPA Refrigeration, process refrigeration system
    o Steam Boilers
    o CO2 systems, Compressed air system
    o CIP System
    o Packaging equipment
    o Conveyors
    o SuperKing IDD Racking Machine (keg filler)
    o Krones Fillers/labelers
    o Liquid carbon dioxide system
    o Malt mills, grain handling equipment
    o Pumps
    o Pressure vessels, valves, flow meters
    o Bottle and case printers
    o Forklifts
    o Air handling equipment
    o Chemical delivery systems for caustic cleaners and acid sanitizers
    • Monitors the use and inventories of spare parts, maintenance supplies, and equipment and initiates reordering when necessary
    • Assists with planning and implementing plant improvements and expansions
    • Completes all necessary paperwork in a timely manner
    • Ensures city, state and federal regulations relating to the maintenance department are met at all times
    • Participates in all internal and external audits
    • Manages the department function and processes
    • Oversees the work activities and professional training and development of 2-3 direct reports
    • Conducts interviews, on-boarding, training, coaching and performance management for 2-3 direct reports
    • This position will be expected to teach/instruct machine operators in the plant on minor machine maintenance and repair to reduce downtime
    • Assists in developing and carrying out department’s goals, objectives, and systems
    • Suggests ways to control labor and supply costs as well as improve processes
    • Ensures that all work activities are performed with attention to the highest standards for quality, safety and compliance with all appropriate legal and safety requirements
    • Participates in sensory training and evaluation to help ensure the highest quality of our products.
    • Maintains a high level of safety awareness for an accident-free work place

    Work Environment:
    Making exceptional beer can be extremely rewarding but not necessarily glamorous! This position is very physical in nature and therefore requires frequently lifting up to 55 lbs, comfort working at heights while standing on ladders, working in tight/cramped spaces and/or in awkward positions for extended periods of time. The work environment includes working on and around potentially dangerous equipment/machinery, handling hazardous materials and exposure to high noise levels.
