  • Electricity Idiot Needs Help with Wiring

    I have 5 ASCO red hats that I need to wire up and I think I may use the PID temperature controller found here: http://www.auberins.com/index.php?ma...roducts_id=106.

    I'm a little unsure about the actual wiring of the controller though and am hoping to get a little advice so I don't fry my solenoids.

    1.) Power-I see the wiring schematic shows to wire to terminals 1 and 2. Can I just take an old plug, strip the wires and connect? Or do I need some sort of separate power supply? (http://auberins.com/images/Manual/SY...tion%201.6.pdf)

    2.) Do I have to wire power for each controller separately or can I wire them in series so they all run off one plug?

    3.) My ASCO's are designed for AC. They have 3 wires coming out of them; 2 red and 1 green/yellow. The way I'm reading the instructions, it looks like I connect each red wire to T13 and T14 while running jumpers from T1 to T13 and T2 to T14.

    The controller(s) will need to be mounted in an enclosure and you can definitely utilize a cord from the enclosure to provide the 120 VAC power to the controllers.

    2.) Do I have to wire power for each controller separately or can I wire them in series so they all run off one plug?

    As long as the power supply is adequate to feed the multiple circuits, it states power consumption is very small <2 watts per controller. I recommend wiring in as their diagram indicates- a switch and fuse installed on the power supply ahead of the controller.

    Here is how I'd wire in the solenoid valve coil- assuming your solenoid coil is 120 VAC.

    It appears you are also going to need to order a Thermocouple for the controller.

      If I run them all off one 120 VAC plug, would I wire a each controller from T1 & T2 to the single plug? Would this be enough to power/control 5 solenoids as well?

        May be best to consult with, or run these questions, by a beer loving electrician....

          Yes, you can run them all off of one plug. I hope you are mounting all of them in a panel so you can run the power through a fuse as shown in the drawing.

            That's the plan, however I can't find a box that will fit all 5 of those Auber's in them. They sell a box that will fit 2. I'm searching for a box big enough as I type this.

            Any leads on where to get a box/cabinet?
