  • Glycol Schematic Question

    In the process of opening a 3 bbl brewery. We are following the great instructions by Pro Refrigeration (http://www.prochiller.com/files/AllAboutGlycol.pdf)but there are 2 items I do not see in the schematic yet are mentioned in several posts on this site.
    1. Shut off valves for the in and out of each fermenter.
    2. Vacuum relief valve at the highest point.
    Are these necessary or can we stick to the schematic?

    You need air bleeders at the highest point on both supply and return. You also want a valve on the main at the T for tank in and out. If you need to replace a solenoid or fix a leak between the main and tank you have to be able to isolate the tank from the main unless you want to shut down the whole system and lose glycol and make a big mess. I would put a pressure gauge after the solenoid on the input to verify you have the correct pressure going into the jackets. Its also a good idea to test the whole loop and each individual tank with straight water before running glycol through the system. You will almost always have leaks here and there especially on the tank fittings. I would use a good thread tape for the metal fittings like Blue Monster and buy some thread rope for real tough unions. Stainless fittings work but brass fittings seal better.

      Glycol system points

      I have not seen a large necessity for air eliminators on this type of loop because the return is essentially open to atmospheric pressure. Such devices are useful on closed loops.
