    Cape Cod Beer ~ PRODUCTION MANAGER/LEAD BREWER

    Cape Cod Beer is an 10 year old self distributing brewery with a geographic reach limited by design from Plymouth to Provincetown, Massachusetts. We have forecasted to produce 6,000 bbls in 2014. We produce 4 beers year round and a variety of seasonal and specialty beers. We distribute primarily in kegs and growlers. We have added 22 oz bombers and mobile canning to our package line up this year. We have a maximum capacity of 13,000 bbls and currently have a year round production staff of 4 (2 brewers/ 1 asst brewer/1 production assistant)

    JOB DESCRIPTION:
    The successful candidate will be excited at the prospect of managing a successful growing production operation in a HIGHLY SEASONAL environment. This position is responsible for managing all aspects of the production of consistent high quality beer based on Cape Cod Beers existing recipes.
    Currently this position has a reporting staff of 4, and reports directly to the Brewmaster / President. This is an on call position during production hours. While this position is primarily a management position, shift brewing will be required occasionally during high volume months ( June – August).

    JOB REQUIREMENTS
    • Minimum of 5 years brewing experience in a production brewery.
    • Minimum of 3 years of management experience – and a love for managing people.
    • High level of mechanical aptitude.
    • Ability to communicate regularly and efficiently with a positive attitude, sincere interest, and in a positive way with staff and management alike.
    • Must enjoy beer and the culture of beer, and be always looking for ways to make the beer better.
    • Flexible work schedule to accommodate production or public events as needed, i.e. be able to work beyond normal hours when necessary.
    • College Degree required. Degree in Fermentation Science, Diploma Course or related brewing course work are a big plus.
    • Clean Driving Record.
    • Knowledge of basic laboratory methods for craft breweries a plus.


    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Overseeing production staff in a production brewery which operates 8 -10 hrs per day off season and 18-21 hrs a day during the high season. (June – Sept)
    • Managing and scheduling of all production staff.
    • Scheduling and managing packaging based on company forecasts and par levels.
    • Maintaining production associated inventory levels, including raw materials and finished product.
    • Maintaining and enforcing the use of standard operating procedures (SOP's)
    • Maintaining quality control throughout all aspects of brewing process.
    • Overseeing that the production area and warehouse is kept clean and tour ready.
    • Working with brewers to maintain a cask and specialty beer program
    • Working as a shift brewer as required.
    • Utilizing mechanical aptitude to maintain and repair all production equipment, as well as training production staff in repair and maintenance techniques.
    • Maintaining production related documentation.
    • Developing and maintaining a sense of “team” amongst production staff.
    • Working collaboratively on new recipe development, process changes or planning and implementation of facilities expansion, not limited to additional space, additional equipment, and alternative packaging and filling scenarios
    • Overseeing budgets and expenses for department
    • Making decisions in a timely manner regarding production
    • Utilizing Excel, Word, Access and similar programs for brewery schedules
    • Setting a good example for the staff with regard to punctuality, attendance, attitude and hygiene.
    • Continuing development of our safety and QC programs
    • Carrying out any other reasonable duties as required.

    ABILITIES AND SKILLS
    • Must be able to safely operate a forklift.
    • Must be able to communicate effectively with staff, suppliers and customers.
    • Must be able to multi-task and effectively manage time while also being detail and quality focused.
    • Must demonstrate a strong work ethic, be able to stand for 8 -10 hours per day, lift 55 lb grain bags, climb stairs, stoop in close quarters, fill and move kegs (165 lbs.) and cases, grip & manipulate tri-clamps and drag hoses, several times a day.
    • Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
    • Must have the ability to read and understand a variety of scientific instruments and calculations.
    • Must be available to work flexible schedules including weekend and occasional overnight shifts.
    • Must be responsible and dependable.
    • Must have a well developed sense of humor.
    • Must enjoy making good beer.
