  • Icewater tank capacity

    Hi,

If cooling with ice water, what kind of capacity of the ice water tank would you recommend for cooling 1000 litres from 95C to 18C. We can assume that the ice water is about 2C-3C in the tank?

I am aware that the size of the heat exchanger, ambient temperature etc will affect my mileage; I am not looking for exact numbers here - just your experience in the field.

    Thanks

    there is a calculation

    Sorry, not in metric units

one BTU heats one pound of water one degree. So you can calculate how many BTU's are needed to cool the wort from 212F to 65F.

Then if you have water that is 35F, you need to know how hot it can get from cooling the wort. This is called approach temperature. It depends on the heat exchanger, but should be about 20 to 30 degrees.

So the water can go from 35F to 180F.

    1000 lbs of wort from 212F to 65F needs 147,000 btu. (212 - 65) * 1000 = 147,000
    This would need 147,000/(180 - 32) = 900 lbs of cold water.

The simple answer, is it should be about one to one.

Thank you very much for your reply. I hoped for something like that. I went ahead and got a 2000 liter CLT to be on the safe side.
