  • Why all the Stonewall??

I have recently finished school and I am shifting gears for a new career.
I have been searching for jobs in the alcohol beverage (my knowledge is primarily beer and Sake) industry and I have been struck with one simple fact; How can an entire industry be only looking for people with "3-5 years of industry experience"??
I have an interesting resume with unique experiences, I have business level japanese skills, I am creative and a hard worker and an all around nice guy (lets hope!)
I refuse to accept the fact that the alcohol beverage industry hires only people with experience in said industry...
My question would be; How do I best go about getting someone to hire me when I have no "industry experience"??

    anyone?

    thanks..

It's early in the game to already have a chip on your shoulder. Yes, like in ANY industry, the advertised jobs will specify experience and/or a technical degree. You're looking for work in a market that has more applicants than open jobs. You're going to have to be creative and to be determined. Identify regions where your language skills will be a benefit.

Yep, Linus has it nailed. More qualified applicants than jobs.

What kinds of jobs are you looking at? You might consider lowering your sights, taking a low-paying entry-level job and just plain working your way up into the kind of job you're aiming for now. A year spent on the bottling line, or cleaning kegs, or delivering beer, getting your feet wet and earning the respect of your employer can open all kinds of doors.

      It won't pay much, though...

        you're right

You are right...I was a bit frustrated.
I am currently searching for any job in the brewing industry.
However because of my language skills, I am also searching for jobs in import/export of alcoholic beverages (wine, beer, sake etc.)
Hopefully my persevence will pay off...
        thanks for the advice..

          Only in America

          Been there TB,

I was in the automotive business. Was a corporation president who decided I wanted to make beer. Had ASE - Master Engine Machinist and Electrical Specialist Certifications. Nobody wanted to hire me either. Aren't we blessed to live in a country that allows us to do whatever we want? That is if we want it bad enough to work for it.

I built my own brewery. Now I understand the motivations of those folks who didn't hire me 10 years ago. These folks have a company to run. They do what they think is best. It's not anything against you personally. If you want it bad enough. You'll find a way. It's a fantastic way to make a living. I love my life! I thank God every day coming to work. How bad do you want it? If it was easy, everyone would be doing it. I honor the sacrifice of my ancestors who came to this country and everyone who paid the price of my freedom by making the most of my freedom and my life.

Dig deep and find the strength to take the risk. Success will follow.

          Drink more beer,

Awesome post, Ken. I too, at the ripe age of 34, decided that I was going to be a professional brewer and nothing was going to stop me. I hired on at my first gig as a dishwasher and then progressed to prep cook, line cook, then finally assistant brewer. Just press on towards the goal, and be determined.
