  • Filtering IPAs

My apologies if this post was covered before, if needed please redirect me to a prior thread if applicable.

We have a 3bbl system, and currently use a 40x40 plate/frame filter using ~6-10 micron filter sheets.

For many of our beers, 9 sheets seems adequate to filter our beer, anything from a heavy doppelbock or stout to a blonde.

When we filter our IPA, we always run into trouble. We currently use 13 sheets for the ipa, but it still seems to hit a wall about half way through the transfer. More perplexing is that when we look at the used filter sheets from the IPA the doesn't seem to be nearly enough trash caught by it to warrant the slowdown. After filtering a doppelbock or stout, the sheets are thick with residue, yet filtration finishes fine with fewer sheets in the filter.

Any clues as to what our issue could be? We gradually increase flow and try to maintain a light pressure differential (5psi) across the filter until it hits the wall, which we let it go as high as the pump will push until flow appears deadlocked.

    Thanks and cheers
