  • DE Filter Modifications

We recently purchased a DE filter, and the supplier has suggested that we modify the filter and remove the recirculation pipework leading back to the dosing tank (used to set the filter beds at the start of filtration). Instead, he's suggested that we set our filter beds by recirculating beer through a dosing tank bypass, and introducing DE to the system by way of the dosing pump.

Does anyone have any experience with the method our supplier is suggesting? Is it a faster way to set the beds, make for better filter beds, etc.?

    Cheers,
    Ryan

What sort of filter is it? A plate and frame, a candle or a horizontal leaf?

What size filter runs are you looking at doing?

Personally I would never precoat using beer, because of the inevitable oxygen pickup when you fill the filter, especially relevant to P&F filters, and, unfortunately, often with the precoats. I would always use water, preferably deaerated water for precoating, though I accept that particularly with P&F filters, there is the issue of dilution at start and finish.

I will send you a PM
