  • Rice Hulls

How many Pound of rice hules do peeple use per pound of wheat for wheat beers.

  • #2
I don't measure them in lbs because they're so light, but I use about 10 gallons of hulls mixed into a wheat beer that's 50% wheat malt and 50% pale malt (350 lbs total grain bill on a 7 bbl system). I don't add them to the mill, but rather periodically dump them into the mash tun as I'm stirring the mash during mash-in.

That's always worked well for me.

Woolsocks, so are you talking 4:1 by weight? So if you use 200 lbs of wheat malt, you use 50 lbs of hulls?

          Indeed!

Here is some text so the message is long enough.

I doubt very much the husk of a kernal represents 25% of its weight. I think even 5%, the figure I use, is way over the ratio.

I might go a bit overboard, but stuck mashes really suck.

I seem to get by on a 15 bbl batch without any hulls - 50% Wheat, 50% Pale malt. Haven't had a stuck mash yet. Guess my mash tun screens rock!

I used 25lb bag (1 bag) for a 30bbl batch. Grain weight changed with beer. Always had same amount, just to cover plates. I would flooded lauter tun just above the plates, used hose to soak. Once they were wet and floated, I dumped all water. This 1) spread out the husks evenly, 2) hydrated them, swell to open and 3) rinsed them clean of dust that can led to off flavors. My 2 cents. Brew well. Michael

We use just under 1 kilogram of rice hulls per 20 kilograms of wheat.

Tremendous apologies for the metric measurements, I hope you can convert them ok.

                      Ten Percent

For the huskless portion of your grain bill, add 10% rice hulls.
They must be rinsed first. Just measure and throw them in your empty lauter tun, spread them evenly around the bottom, and sparge with the drain open until it runs somewhat clear. Mash on top, mix/rake/recirc like usual. They'll be your new best friend.

                      Here's what it'll look like:

I use about 1#/bbl for 50/50 barley to wheat
