  • First time Filtering tips techniques help. pall supra disk

    Hey,
We just got a pall supra disk 3 module filter. We have a 8.5 barrel brewhouse. I have never used a filter before so I am looking for any advice or tips from people using this filter. Just don't want to waste a batch of beer trying to get past this learning curve. No advice is too obvious as I say I have never used a filter before. Always just fined with good results. Thanks for any help.

    Hello Groves,
While I am sure you will get great advice, tips, and tricks on the forum, to begin with it would be a lot better to go to your local Pall sales rep and have them give you the Official Operating Procedures. I would post them here, but we are constantly updating them, and always want to ensure that brewers have the latest and greatest info. Setup, usage, and break down aren't difficult, but there are some things you need to do to ensure that you don't damage the filters and that you clean and store properly.

Please feel free to email me at Milton.Leland@Pall.com, and we can get you set up.

We are barely able to filter more than 100 bbl with these modules (on aregular basis, over the course of 10 months). We've been carefully following the instructions from Pall and their local rep. Does anyone experience the same ? There's so much used filters for sale out there, than I'm wondering if this product is reliable

I have been pretty happy so far. To my knowledge you should be able to run 1000-1500 BBLs thru set of modules.

I do change my modules about once a year. And run about 300 BBLs thru it. Oversizing your filter is a good idea.

Zucker Bee - can you be more specific about the SUPRAdisc setup you are running? Are they 12" or 16" modules? Is it an actual Pall filter, or was it bought from somewhere else and just fits Pall SDII modules?

I know that sounds like I'm being picky, but in order to get the most life out of the filters there are procedures that should be followed, and unfortunately they won't work with some of the off-brand filter housings. One of the biggest things to look out for is the ability to backflush the filters aggressively. With a Pall housing and backflush plates, there should be no trouble doing that and you will get longer life. If you don't have backflush plates, you have to be more gentle so as to not damage anything. As you can imagine, a gentle cleaning doesn't work as well as a more aggressive one.

As for the filter size, a 16" filter will suit the average brewery a LOT better than a 12" due to surface area and the flow rates required. Some breweries will purchase a 12" filter housing not realizing that, then try to run it at speeds meant for a 16" housing, and what results is short filter life and an unhappy customer.

If you can be specific about what you have, I may be able to give you some tips on improving life. You can also email me directly (Milton.Leland@Pall.com), but if we keep it public on the forum it may help others who are having similar issues.

          Thanks!

            Hi Milton

We use 3x12" modules in a GWKent housing. Batches are about 15bbl
With beer, we always maintain a differential of no more than 5 PSI (FV= 13PSI and BT = 5 PSI) pushing with CO2 -not involving a pump, at a rate of no more than 13 liters/minute
When we clean, we backflush with cold water, then mix in hot water gradually until it reaches 70°c at a rate of no more than 13 liters/minute. Then we flush with CO2 and keep it under a 10 PSI pressure until next usage

            > "backflush plates"

            as on fig. 8 here? : http://www.pall.com/main/food-and-be....page?id=47907

            No, we don't have that

              thanks milton

Sorry I am just getting back to on the thread even though I started it. Amanda came by and did a filter run with me. Very helpful and I am happy with pall's service. However if you have any tips for cooling the filter down after the hot water sanitize I would love to hear them. PAA instead? or should I just stop whining.

just to bump. heat sanitation is a no brainer, but I've seen issues with this, even in DE horizontal leaf. so any wise words on chem-sanitation would be well received.

                cheers!
