  • How do you price special parties at your Brew Pub?

We've been asked a few times about special events customers want to rent out the space. How do others price for this sort of event? Run a tab? Open bar? Flat rate for the room for a specific period of time then charge customers as they go?

    All comments are welcome!

    Thank you!

Our tap room seats about 70. We have only done one private event. It was for one of our suppliers Xmas party. Our regular customers were pissed that we were "closed". We won't do it again

Oh. We did it for free because they take good care of us.

I have been the owner of the only brewpub in a small town (<1000 people) for 18 years and have been asked to rent out my pub for private parties dozens of times. My philosophy, which I share with those inquirers, is that "Pub" stands for "Public House" and as such the Pub should be open and available to the community whenever possible. Putting profits over public service is simply contrary to our mission statement. When my first Pub burned down in 2001, we were able to move into a larger space with seating for 200. This allowed us to do semi-private parties concurrent with regular pub business.
        A couple pieces of advice
for anyone planning on doing this: Require a set menu for large parties (we define as 25+) and make sure your kitchen is designed such that you can handle the party without slowing down service to your regular customers!

I re-read the original question and I realized I got sidetracked a little in my post. We charge the same per person for large parties as we would for a regular customer walking in the door. The reason is that we don't think people should be penalized for bringing large amounts of people into the brewpub. Nor should they be discounted. if an automatic service charge is part of your policy for large parties be sure to inform the person making the reservation ahead of time
