  • Micro malt plants

I'm not sure about anyone else, but lately we have been getting a lot of emails/calls about people considering opening malt plants/companies checking interest in micro (1000kg or so) malting plants.
A year ago I don't know if I would have considered this, I've done the homebrew attempt of malting my own grain and it was a huge hassle. But currently we spend about 4k$/month on malt, and 1000$ of that is shipping. Our location is in the middle of some of the best grown malt barley, but the closest malt house is 600-700km away. If farmers are selling malting barley for 1/10 of the price of the finished product, and shipping is 25% of our malt bill, is it worth considering malting in house, even if we are using only 2500-3500kg/month?
Custom malt is very intriguing, but I think from a cost/benefit it would be worth it. Has anyone else taken the plunge, or looked into these 250kg-5000kg malt houses? We already have someone with a organic biology degree that is interested in working with our yeast program, and this would be something that he would be able to handle.

Please check out this guild. If you have a good welder you can build a a 800KG unit for under $15.000 USD. That would produce consistent base malt.
Darker malts your price goes up.
