  • Golden Naked Oats- no need to mash?

cuz thats what it says in the product sheet on BSG site. although the simpsons site doesnt say anything about this. just that its a crystal oat, about 10L.

so are you supposed to just dump into mash for last 10-15 minutes? not sure why this is causing my braincomputer to crash, but something just doesnt sound right....

Well, they're a crystal-type malt, so no, they don't "need" mashing in the sense that they are non-enzymatic, like all crystal malts. Many crystal malts can, in theory, simply be added during the sparge, just like roasted malts, or for that matter, steeped in water at the appropriate pH and temperature. It all depends on what you're looking to get out of them. That said, it's usually simple enough to just put the crystal malt in with the larger mash, unless for some reason you're getting close to maximizing the available space in your mash/lauter tun.

Thats what we have been doing, milling with the rest and into the mash. Not sure why it threw me for a loop, wondered if Simpson was hinting at some other techniques or reason, like maxing out mash tun.

Considering that they are oats, would adding them late or just to sparge lessen problems with sticky mash and stuck sparge? youd have regular mash below and oats only on the top if you added late and didn't mix/rake.
