  • Recommendation on steam solenoids

I need to replace the steam solenoids to my kettle as the steam is blowing past them when they are supposed to be closed where I then control with globe valves before the solenoid. Does anyone have recommendations on make and model. The jackets are controlled by the control panel, and I would like to use them. I read some people prefer slow opening? solenoid/valves. Make and models please.

    thanks,
    Scott

    Do NOT use solenoid valves.

Solenoids are prone to failure, especially in steam service. Seen many that I've ripped out in favor of much more robust, purpose-built steam valves. I think that the best you can get is Spirax-Sarco piston-actuated PF-6. Lots of knockoffs out there with most of lesser quality. They are easy to substitute in your current operation with the addition of instrument air. A small pilot solenoid actuates the steam valve with the same electrical signal you use now. These should last you nearly forever. Best of luck!

      thank you

Thank you, that was what I was looking for. I didn't think they were called solenoids, and yes the solenoids that were installed havent even lasted a year. Lesson learned.

Honeywell ML 6984A4000 24v Coupled Valve Actuator, they last a good long time, and even longer if you put a little copper based anti seize compound on the valve stems occasionally. The great part is you can hook these up to pots and dial in how much you want the valve open. On first power up the actuator opens all the way and closes all the way then divides the distance into parts. There may be better but these have worked very well for us.

          Or...

If it's proportional control you want, then I'd recommend the Spirax-Sarco Piston Actuated Modulating Steam Control Valve, model PM61-3NC. Works great for maintaining precise control.
