  • New Equipment Cleaning

Our new system is arriving on Friday and wondering on experience getting it ready cleaning/wise for brewing....

Any recommendations on cleaning products/procedures for brand new equipment to remove manufacturing residues/oils/grease? Are there food safe degreasers we should use? Will a standard CIP cycle be good enough?

    Thanks!

Call Dana Johnson at BIRKO Chemical, his recommendations worked better for me than other processes I have used.

      +10x

Dana is the man, and I just recommended him in another thread. Know him personally, but he just wrote a great article in New Brewer July/August edition too. He's been doing it since 95, and is a homebrewer.

Birko's website also has good pdf's on passivation and cleaning methods, and I like their chemicals. Loeffler is another good choice too.

Before you start brewing you want to thoroughly clean and passivate your equipment. This generally involves running a hot caustic first to remove transportation soil and/or welding oils left over from manufacturing. Then rinse and passivate each tank with a Nitric Acid solution. We have a passivation procedure I can e-mail you.

Depending on the supplier and their steel quality, you may have to take additional steps. Check your tanks by wiping them with a white soft non-abrasive rag after passivation. If the rag turns greyish, you have to perform another step and repassivate.

You can contact me directly if you would like additional information and product recommendations.

          Good Luck with your brewery.

          Cheers,
