  • Glycol cooled walk-in question?

How does it using the glycol chiller to cool the walk-in work? Is there a radiator with a fan on the inside of the walk-in that the glycol circulates through and the fan blows across the coils/fins? If so could any appropriately sized radiator and fan work? Maybe and old walk-in evaporator coil and fan?

    Thanks

I think you are better off getting conventional compressor / Evaporator in your walking.

Yes, to answer your question, this is how they work. Yes in theory an appropriate sized radiator and fan should work. You would of course want some sort of temperature controller on the system to regulate. Also the glycol would need to be regulated to an appropriate flow.

To piggy back the other comment, you are probably better off purchasing an independent compressor/evaporator for the cold room efficiency wise.

They do make Glycol Fancoil Units. They are sized and circuited differently than DX so cannot be used interchangably.
Because most small Microbreweries do not have enough chiller capacity to run this way, you would have to take the box load into account as well as other factors.
Unless you have plenty of extra cooling capacity on your system its not a good idea, especially if you are using a single chiller for knockout AND brite service as well.
If you have the redundancy and extra needed capacity they can work well.

The coil will need to be sized appropriately based on the dimensions of your cold room. The fans will blow continuously (keeps the coil from freezing up) and will operate basically just like a tank. When the room requires cooling, the solenoid will open to allow the glycol to flow thru the coil. Just note, you will need a solenoid and thermostat to maintain the desired temp. If you need assistance sizing the coil, or to see if your chiller has enough capacity feel free to reach out and I will be glad to help.

          I hope this helps.

We are working on the same issue...

When we move to our new location we planned ahead and purchase an oversized chiller from Pro Refrigeration to be able to help us expand in the future. We are ordering two Glycol Fancoil Units from http://gdchillers.com/products/glycol-fan-coils/ because we have plenty of extra BTUs to be able to use that. The fans we are getting are $1,050 each and a control unit for $510. That is more affordable for us compared to the regular commercial cooling units that are 3-5 times that price for the same purpose. If you have a chiller that has excess BTUs it is much more affordable to use that for a walk in cooler. We have been using CoolBot for the last few years and they work well in smaller coolers but won't be the best in our larger cooler.
