  • Market for craft brew - research project

I am an MBA student at Bainbridge Graduate Institute and am working on a research project - our team chose to write a market analysis on the craft brew industry and would like to focus on the Pacific Northwest, if we can get the data (else craft brew in the U.S. will work). We would also (time permitting) like to review business startup alternatives in the craft beer industry - ex. starting with only a tasting room and expanding to brew pub or starting with full brewery and distributing, or even partnering with restaurant to start with contract brewing, etc.

    Our research question is:
What is the market for craft beer in the Pacific Northwest, and what are the most efficient start-up business models?
    • Can anyone point us to specific sources that can help us figure out the current market?
    • What specific pieces of data do you think would help us answer our question?
    • Would any of you who are brewery managers/owners be willing to be interviewed to help us collect data?

So far, we're having a hard time getting the info we need. We did get a 2007 report written by Data Monitor for the US beer industry in general, but it focuses more on large breweries.
We hope to be able to produce a paper that is worthy of sharing.

Thanks for any and all help!
    Maria

Source: try Brewers Association http://www.beertown.org/ and get your hands on their publication New Brewer. Also, their The Brewers Association's Guide to Starting Your Own Brewery -- that will give you some overall idea of how it generally works.

That sounds like your own homework, doesn't it?

Business models... Just to point out, while brewpub, production brewery, contract brewery/brand all seem to be in the same "craft beer" industry, they are not. They each have very unique market. Make sure you are familiar with the local state regulations and the three-tier system.

      thanks!

Thanks for your reply! I found some helpful stats on the beertown site.

Does anyone happen to have the industry edition of New Brewer to tell me if the stats in there are more helpful than what's on the site here: http://www.beertown.org/craftbrewing/statistics.html ?

      Thanks again!
