Hats off to William Steel
You have got to hand it to William Steel (Glasgow inventor who brewed at West Barns) who invented the Steel's masher in 1853 - yes that's right 1853. Here we are still debating how to do a better job in the 21st century.
Oh and by the way Charles Maitland (from Haddington but brewed in Alloa) invented a simple no moving parts masher (using spray jets) in 1864.
West Barns and Haddington are both just along the road from me in Dunbar.
I've built a few mash hydrators similar to the Maitland device and they all seemed to work pretty well.
