    Here come the flowers!

    Here come the hop flowers!
This pict is of a H. L. var. neomexicana hop. She's is a super dwarf with a very short internode distance. Notice the high ratio of flowers to leaves and the fat stem usually found on tall plants. This plant is only 7' tall with 5' of flowers and has about as many flowers as plants that are 13' tall.

Hops nearing harvest at Blue Mountain Brewery...

A link to our facebook page of hops pictures from 2 weeks ago. Harvest is set for Aug. 2nd on our 4-year-old Cascades.

This is our first year growing soybeans between the rows to help fix the nitrogen. Seems to have worked well. Irrigated it pretty well in these bad dry weeks we've been suffering. Check out how brown the brewery grass is compared to the hops in one of the pics!

      Happy hopping,

        Lookin' good Taylor!
You sure have a pretty place.
I wonder how the native hops would like it there?
        Bet they do!
I hear the natives that made it to San Fransisco are far out performing the Euro hops .

          Hmmm...

Would love to try some NeoMexicana...we're thinking of putting in just a small row by a new parking lot for next season. You selling?

I had two cascade crowns grow together into this beautiful mess. Took a first harvest Sunday and snipped the bines to make room for the next...probably going to get about 1 kg from the first harvest when dry.

Funny cropping, had to cut 4 kb and don't have a picture editor

                  Nice picts Taylor!

Best of all,,,looks like everybody had fun,,,the best part of hop picking.
You got those Cascades in quick there in the mountains!

We're still waiting here. Cones are now getting the resin glands to swell. Perhaps a few individuals from our breeding program will come in the next week. Others are still making hairs and will come in later. It's an odd cool year here.

Here's a couple picts of a cross of a Columbus female and our Rio hop stud. Great aromas happening everyday! Gotta love variety!

                    Thanks and good luck!

Thanks Wildcrafter, and good luck with your harvest. Let me know if and when you want to part with 50 or so rhizomes of your "house" breed of hops...I'd love to see how they'd do down here in Virginia in a test field!

                      Harvest begins

Hop harvest finally begins Saturday! Homebrews with a couple of our signature varieties are now on tap for the hop pickers. Woo hoo! Time to get 'er done! Come pick hops for homebrews and taste the difference if ya care??

Picked Hop Tree fruits today with friends,,,(Rutacea ptelea trifoliata),, it's related to citrus,,and makes great beer. Unique compounds in it that relate to the name of the plant too. Certainly a missed opportunity by brewers that the protective ants around each plant take advantage of!

Black, red, and golden currents are on now in the mountains. Aspen boletes and more. Herb harvest time.

Man, how I love harvest time!!!

Taylor,,,I have some thoughts for later.

We got a whole row of one variety harvested so far. 10 more rows to go. Homebrews are going fast. The variety we picked is the beer we're drinking at the moment. We used 1 oz/gal for a light 4% beer using Safale S-04. A major hit! All love this super simple ale. The flavor of this hop is citrus lemon rind with pineapple and peach,,,and that's the flavor of the brew.

Kinda makes the work worthwhile having crazy flavored beers just by using a different hop.

BTW- all folks wish brews like this were on the market as it'd be all they drink.

Here's a pict of a cross of a Columbus female and a Rio (H. L. var. neomexicana variety) male. Notice the short internode distance. A nice simple rope of golden cones full of resin with stellar aroma,,,and early. Harvested her today,,,and Columbus comes in late in normal hop world. The Rio hops are the first in the bag here in NM and in a week, all the Rio hops will be harvested. The aromas are heady.

Nice, Wildcrafter! I simply must get some of those rhizomes next year! What do you want, cash, beer?

                                More picts of hops!
All are pure H. L. var. neomexicana hops and all are certified organic.

These are all F2 generation Rio hop breedings,,each an individual. Notice the very high flower to vegetation ratio, super short internode distance, and cone structure. Real nice aroma hops with no harsh bite like Euro hops. All are easy pickers and no more than 12' tall with most plants around 8-10' tall,,,at least they only get that big here in New Mexico.

It's definitely time for some of these girls to grow up and join the big world!
