Golden Promise what?

Does anyone routinely use Golden Promise malt from Simpsons? The "promise" appears to be that it will clog the auger, which it accomplished in the two batches that I've used it in now. It is super dusty and packed up at the end of the auger both brews, making it necessary to get up there and chisel it out!! There was so much dust from this stuff, my assistant looked like Casper after dough in! That was pretty awesome. The second brew I increased the mill gap and it still did the exact same thing. I'm obviously not buying this stuff anymore. Has anyone else had this happen?

We have used Golden Promise from Simpsons for several years in one of our flagship beers. My experience has always been that it mills and lauetrs VERY nicely. Never had problems with it clogging the auger in either the pub or the production plant.

You may try reducing the gate speed on your mill, not necessarily the mill gap. It may be that because of the size of the kernals, it is milling so fast that the auger is pulverizing it as it packs during transport. I've had that problem in the past, and it seems that fixed the problem.

That makes sense, I hadn't considered that. I still think I'm going to stick with Maris Otter.

Honestly, I would bet the same thing happens with Marris Otter? I personally love Golden Promise. Never had any problems with it. I get a better yield with it than with any other malt, I have lautered faster with that malt than any other, and I love the fact that it does not contribute nearly the amount of color or richness that Marris Otter does.

I have used Maris Otter from every supplier possible and have had great results with all of it. It must have just been the batch that I used, maybe it was much drier than usual? I'm brewing a 26 Plato Imperial Amber today (to celebrate my second son's birth) with GlenEagle's Maris and the lauter is fine, two mashes packed to the brim, first wort at 27 Plato! Since nobody else shares my experience, it must have just been a fluke. Thanks for the input gentlemen.

I wouldn't foresake Golden Promise right off the bat...

If you malt is basically turning to dust when you mill it, the malt is either 'old' and dried out. You're talking about a friability issue here. You may want to talk to your supplier about the particular LOT number for this batch of Golden Promise.

I use Golden Promise in my higher end beers and love the flavor contribution.
We do not have milling issues, augering issues or anything similar. The supplier may have heard from others with same problem though I would suspect we would have heard about that here...

If you still have some of this malt you could send a sample back to your supplier. If you're dealing with BSG they could have the Rahr Malt lab in Shakopee, MN give you a moisture content and a 'through test' as well.

If you have been using other base malt and have not been regapping there is a good chance the Golden Promise kernel size is larger and you are pulverizing it. This coupled with really low moisture could generate more 'dust' than normal.

I too have experienced the clogged auger, on multiple occasions, while mashing in with Simpsons Golden Promise. I love the flavor profile of this base malt. I have found two solutions to the problem, 1. Adjust the mill gate(not gap!) so that the auger chute doesn't fill so fast. Or 2. Add a little golden promise at a time I.e. Cut the golden promise if your recipe allows. In many of my recipes I use GP as only half of my base so it is not hard to use option 2 with success. Hope this can help someone else out there who has experienced this problem. Oh forgot to mention that for me I found that my auger clogged but due to a bottleneck in the mash cone just before my strike water hits the grain. Good luck with the promise....
