  • Turbo Tap for growler fills

Has anyone tried out the Turbo Tap growler fillers? I'd love to hear thoughts on these or on Turbo Taps in general.

Bump for this thread. We are looking at Turbo Tap but it is quite a bit of money. Anyone have any new insight on these?

We ended up going with the Perlick Control Flow Faucets and have been very happy with them. They're about $50 a piece so a lot cheaper than Turbo Tap

We borrowed a Turbo tap from a local bar to see if we liked using them. It was used for less than a day before being removed. We never did figure out how to fill growlers with it on either.
No we use the perlick flow control taps as well - they are fantastic

how does the perlick flow control faucet work?

do you use the faucets to fill growlers or pints rapidly? How do they work in general?

          thanks,
          sam

            blichmann beer gun

There's a new craft beer bar down here (Dallas, TX) which specializes in growler pours (in addition to on premise sales) and serves all their draft beer and growler fills with Blichmann Beer Guns. They aren't perfect (the little rubber feet tend to go flying off the bottoms) but work quite well and seem to produce a pretty stable growler of beer.

Perlick Control Flow Faucets are the way to go. If there's something wrong with them, I haven't found it yet.

              Cheers,

              Jeff

                be more specific

A couple of posters are big on perlick control flow faucets. Please be more specific. What about them makes them better than a standard faucet? Better for pouring pints or growlers? Howe do they work?

                thanks,
                Sam

Hey Sam. The faucets work by using an additional valve between the shank and the ball that releases beer through the faucet. It is controlled by moving a small handle up and down to control the amount of beer flowing through the faucet. So if you have a beer that is not pouring well you can dial back the amount of flow you have so that you end up with less waste. Its great for growlers because you can start it off slow so that you don't get that big mass of foam in the bottom that you normally get due to the distance the beer falls from faucet to bottom of growler. Once you get 1/4 to 1/2 full you can dial your pressure up a bit so that it fills a little more quickly. We use them for everything in our stores and they are fantastic.

There are a couple little things you should know about them though. If you tighten the handle assembly down to far you can pinch the little O ring and cause the faucet to leak a bit around the top of the assembly. Be careful with that. Cleaning them can be a bit of a pain as you have to take apart the handle assembly as well as the flow control assembly. If you're pouring a higher gravity beer like a Barleywine you'll want to clean the flow assembly every day or so as it will get sticky and not want to move. Keep a little sleeve of O rings on hand in case one gets pinched.

Perlick makes a growler filler - basically a ss plug with two o-rings on it that plugs into the faucet, a length of tube goes to the bottom of the growler, so no foam from splashing, if you have a cold growler at least. Foxx has them for about $5 I think. I tiny dab of lube makes them go on and off the faucet easily. It should combine great with the flow control.
