  • Concern over scratch in pump cover

Got this Thomsen pump head with baldor washdown motor from an auction, paid 900$. when I got it I quickly noticed how badly it had been maintained. The impeller shaft key was gone and it look as if they ran the pump without a key a while by forcing the machine screw in the key slot. Obviously this caused the impeller to run against the cover wall.

There is some major scratches in there that makes me nervous about using it as a transfer pump for our previous beer.

Looking at the photos I included with this message, what do you think? Should it just be used as a CIP pump? I'm affraid a colony of nasties are waiting to attack!

    Thanks!

you know, if you took it to a local machine shop, they could probably buff it smooth again,

I bought a new back plate for one of my Thomsen pump several months ago for under a hundred. If you have to replace, it should not be too expensive.

in this case its the head, a lot more machining behind the head then back plate. Where did you buy your backplate?
          Cheers!

I think I bought it direct, or they sent me to a distributor. Sorry it has been a while in beer years.
