    Motor and Gearbox for mill.

    Hi,

Not sure if I'm posting in the right section so please tell me if it is so. We're starting a 7bbl brewhouse in San Diego (who isn't?) and we are in the process of putting together a cheap mill until we can afford a better one. I looked at a Rollem Crimper Oat mill but it seemed to pulverize the barley more than it 'crushed' it. It's main drawbacks were the cast iron rollers and only 2 of them.

Would the following motor and gearbox be okay to drive a monster mill 3 2.0
-3 rollers, 2" diamter and 6" length (that's what she said)

Dayton 3/4 HP belt driven motor hooked up to a 10:1 gearbox? It's pretty much the same motor as the Rollem except the model I tested had a 31:1 ratio and it took five minutes to mill a 50 lb. sack so I'd like a faster crush.

You are asking about Monster Mill 3 Rollers?

You need at least 1/2 hp 1750 rmp motor.
Gear it down to 300 - 400 rmp and you should be fine.

You can contact the guys at monster too. I think they have an FAQ link on the site.

I ran a test on someone elses that had a 1HP 1725 with a Capacitor geared at 10:1 to the mill. It took 3 minutes to mill 26 lbs. I'd like to speed it up just a tad, would I be better off looking at a 1.5 HP or going with a higher gear ratio like 15 or 20:1?
