BREWER

Brief Description

The Brewer position in our breweries requires a minimum physical capacity for strength, agility and endurance. This is due to the strenuous labor required to operate our brewing facilities. Lifting requirements include being able to lift and move bags of grain which can exceed 50 pounds, as well as frequent dead-lifts of full kegs (approximately 165 pounds) to a height of 2 feet and being able to move full kegs along ground level. Experience using a handtruck, forklift and other material handling equipment is helpful, but not required.

This job will primarily include wort production, handling fermentation and maturation, beer filtration and cellar work, cleaning and racking casks and kegs, draft line cleaning, server training, and overall plant sanitation. Server training is a very important part of our operation; therefore, we need someone who is articulate and a good communicator. These skills are also important for our beer-tasting dinners, festivals, and other promotional events which we expect brewery staff to participate in.

Qualifications

We are looking for an individual who has uncompromising standards along with the ability to be patient with fellow employees. We need someone who has a passion both for full-flavored beer and the brewing industry as a whole. A viable candidate for this position should have a long-term commitment to a career in brewing beer, as demonstrated by 2 - 5 years practical experience in a brewery or formal training in malting and brewing science and technology. A combination of experience and training is preferred. Proficiency with computer use required (word processing and spreadsheets). No applicant with any record of alcohol-related violations of law will be considered.

Responsibilities

*General
full awareness and proper management of the following hazards: trip, slip, fall, cut, crush, strain, pressure, electrical, explosion, heat, confined space, chemical, and material
general plant cleanliness
thorough completion of records
attend festivals, beer tastings, and other promotional or special events on an as-needed basis

*Brewhouse and Wort Production
raw materials receiving, storage, and handling
measure out raw materials according to brewery recipes
spent grain disposal (including arranging pickups)
tank cleaning and sanitation
brewhouse cleaning and general cleanliness
operate brewhouse equipment for wort production

*Cellar Work
yeast pitching
data collection during fermentations
attending to fermentations (i.e. changing temperature setpoints, cleaning out cones, capping, monitoring pressures, dry-hopping, etc.)
cellar transfers and filtration
filter setup, breakdown, cleaning and sanitation
spent filter media disposal
tank cleaning, sanitation, and CO2 purging in preparation for beer transfers
cold space cleaning and general cellar cleanliness
yeast management and harvesting
preparation of beer for packaging

*Finished Beer
keg and cask cleaning/sanitation
keg and cask filling operations
assist in bottling line operations
maintain inventory of finished goods in cold storage

Compensation

Salary is commensurate with experience and training. Benefits include paid medical insurance and vacation. Dental and vision insurance are available through the company.

The Brewery

Brewer's Alley is a small brewpub located in the heart of historic Frederick, Maryland, in the midst of the downtown restaurant scene. We are growing at an accelerating rate, and have recently opened up Monocacy Brewing Company, which is our offsite packaging-only brewery.
