It's that "AHA" moment. Thanks for that. Yes I had misunderstood. I will have to try it sometime if I ever get my own brewing plant.

      FWH

I started first wort hopping my pale ale several batches ago and have gradually adjusted my additions along the way. I was looking for improved hop flavor over aroma, as I dry hop the beer and the aroma contribution would be negligible. For a 15 Bbl batch I am currently adding 3.5 lbs of medium alpha hops at the start of the run off, bittering hops at 60 min before KO and then about 3 additional pounds at 20 minutes before KO. The results have been excellent and I have continually shifted hops from the 20 minute addition to the first wort hop. I have noticed a smoother hop flavor without the roughness, and as far as bitternes goes I have used a Utilization factor of 15% for the FWH and have had no problems. I would definately reccomend giving it a try.
