  • HELP! Backed Up Grease Trap!

We are having an issue with solid waste clogging the grease traps which run through the restaurant attached to our 30BBL 4 vessel production brewery. We've managed to capture and dispose 95% of the hop trub dropped out of our fermentation vessels, but just backed up our drains with hop trub evacuated from our Whirlpool vessel. When the grease trap gets clogged we have to get it pumped at about $500 a pop. Unfortunately we live in rural Colorado; the county isn't too appreciative of receiving our solid waste (as in won't).

We have plans on installing a spent grain/hop silo, but until that comes does anybody have any suggestions for capturing trub out of our Whirlpool vessel? It requires quite a bit of water, which would suggest we need to separate the solids...

    Thanks in advance!

    Re-Pipe

There will be some different answers for different situations, but it is a mistake to mix brewery effluent with any other streams and vice versa. It is also a mistake to mix Kitchen effluent with anything else. Other plants and settings may allow for different solutions, but having a separate trap [tank] that does have to be pumped REGULAR out is the way we run and its definitely common. You can size the tank for longer intervals.

A very savvy waste water Engineer may have some other creative suggestions.
Otherwise you might be able to increase the size of your existing trap by 3 or more times.
