  • Dimensions for Nano Mash Lauter Tun

    We want to design a mash lauter tun for a nano brewery.
    Want to confirm if my calculated dimension are right.
    What is the ideal grain bed depth in Mash / Latuer tun ?
    There does not seem to be much consensus. Also all books talk about Lauter tun grain bed depth, not specifically about MLT grain bed depths.

    Mash / Lauter tun dimensions by 2 methods.

    Calculation by grain bed depth -

    Calculations according to - http://haandbryg.dk/mashcalc.html

    Mash Volume (liters) = (Mash thickness + 0.7) x kg malt

    And a height of grain bed should in lauter tuns is about 30 - 60cms.
    And height of grain beds in Infusion mash tuns is about 60 - 90 cms.
    For safety we will stick to 40cm.

    Average beer will need 50Kgs of grain to make around 200L of finished beer. The grain bill can be 40 - 60kgs depending on the type of beer.

    Mash volume = (2.7 + 0.7) x 50 = 170L

    Let’s target 40cm height

    V = pi R2 H
    170L = pi x R2 x 40cm

    Radius = 36cm

    ---------------------------------

    Calculation by Loading -

    Use dry grist weight to target 150 - 250 Kg/ m2 of weight on the mesh screen.
    Let’s take typical loading of 170 Kg/ m2

    Mesh screen area = 50 / 170 = 0.2941 m2
    0.2941 = pi R2

    Radius = 30cm

    ------------------------------

    Height above the mesh screen = 110cm, we need to check if the CIP spray ball, sparge shower, etc will fit.

    Final Radius = 33cm, Height above wedge wire = 110cm

    Am I on the right track ?
