  • Draft equipment

    Hey Guys,

Reading the thread about the long draft runs brought me to this question.

When you guys (in the US) get a new account, who generally pays for all the draft equipment (towers/faucets, fob detectors, lines)? How does this generally work...

    Thanks,

    Hey Rosie,

in the U.S. it is against the law for a brewer to provide these items / service free of charge....but a lot of people violate the law! Most AB distributors will clean the lines of bars and restaurants that carry their product. Why the law isn't more heavily enforced here is anyone's guess.

      Rosie,

Individual states have different laws regulating what a brewer or distributor can provide to a tavern. However, as Larry said, the rules are not often enforced and therefore distributors violate them often. In our area, the general practice is that the beer wholesaler cleans and maintains the draft equipment, and will install free of charge any new equipment with the tavern owner paying for the cost of the parts. Hope that helps!

Tied House Laws / Installing Draft Equipment

In California, code 25500 of the Tied House Laws states:

"No manufacturer, winegrower...shall...furnish, give, or lend any money or other thing of value...to...any person engaging in operating, owning, or maintaining any on-sale premises where alcoholic beverages are sold for consumption on the premises."

"No manufacturer...shall...own any interest...in the business, furniture, fixtures, refrigeration equipment...in any premises operated or maintained under any on-sale license for the sale of alcoholic beverages..."

"No manufacturer...shall...furnish, give, rent, or sell...any equipment, fixtures, or supplies, other than alcoholic beverages, to any person engaged in operating, owning, or maintaining any on-sale premises where alcoholic beverages are sold for consumption on the premises. This...shall not prohibit the furnishing of draft beer pumps and iceboxes to those persons who operate on a temporary basis."
