  • Crowlers - Dixie vs. Oskar Blues

Hey everyone. Our brewery is currently under construction and we are sorting out our packaging. We are very interested in the Crowler system here on the west coast of BC. It is in very limited use here in BC and we think that the surf, hiking, mtn. bike crowd will really dig the cans as an option to a glass Growler. So, how has it gone with these two systems. I've read that Dixie sealer may be more reliable than the Oskar Blues, but looking to get some real world feedback before we make the plunge with one of these.

    Cheers!

We have put around 40,000 cans through our Oskar blues seamer and it has been flawless. As long as you check the seaming specs often, and keep it clean I think it's pretty bulletproof. I don't have any exp. with the Dixie seamer other than the fact the price was about double back when I checked.

      Considerations

I would be interested in the Dixie based on their history in the seaming business. Hav not seen that one.
The Oskar Blues unit is ok, but with some singular points that don't wear long such as the plated screws that hold the seam wheels in place.
These should have been made out of SS or something that will not degrade so fast in the presence of beer.
Also the idea that this thing has to be oiled up every day can add to your already over the top to do list.
Baseline on Seam thickness, countersink, and seam height can be read with manual instruments, but the can diameter is too large for standard optical machine to read. I would compare the 2 for ruggedness and their ability to stay in adjustment.
If you can have your bar staff properly clean the machine, you are better off.

After being open for a few months, we are thinking of pulling the trigger on a Crowler system. Anymore insight into Oskar Blues vs Dixie?

        Cheers!
