  • Shadow box in cold room

    We are nearing the end of construction and are finishing out our service cold box. When we first built it, we did not include a shadow box for the 12" tap shanks. The wall is roughly 10.5 inches thick. It is thinbrick, 5/8" drywall, then 5" of rigid insulation followed by another sheet of drywall. We are still waiting for our 3 phase upgrade so we have not been able to fire up the chiller and cool that room to do any testing for foaming issues. In general, do you expect to see foaming issues with this setup? Trying to decide if we cut out the drywall and put in a shadowbox. If so, how much insulation should we leave in place?

    Use a shadowbox or suffer the consequences--a glass or two of foamy beer anytime a tap sits long enough to warm up. With a small blower moving the cool air from the cooler through the shadowbox, an inch of closed-cell foam is plenty. We had a local HVAC company make ours from galvanized sheet metal--pretty cheap.

    Be sure the shadowbox goes all the way to the back of the plate you've mounted the faucets on, so the entire stem is cooled to as close to the faucets as possible.

        From everything I've read the shadowbox seems to be the best option. Looking for practical advice or directions on how to install the actual shadowbox in the cooler wall.

            We've since changed our system to a glycol-cooled tower, so no pics of the shadowbox.

            The way we built our is in two pieces--one goes in from the cooler side, the other is a tiny bit smaller so it slides into the cooler side from the tap side, then the mounting plate for the faucets mounts over the outside flanges. We insulated the shadowbox with 1" of Armaflex closed-cell neoprene.
