    Mash tun size/O.G. formula

    Hello everyone,

    Looking for some help with finding a good formula for calculating the following:

    Brewing 10bbl batches, what is the highest O.G. beer that can be mashed in a 300 gallon total volume mash tun and not have the mash tun overflow. Mashing in with 1.5qts water/lb of grain.

    Plenty of software (including free website calculators of varying accuracy) to calculate how much total volume you'd need for a certain mash size, but the OG will depend largely on your brewhouse efficiency - and to a lesser extent on the type of grain used.

    A tun with 300-gallon useful mash capacity should accommodate about 650 pounds of grain at 1.5 quarts/pound.

    The calculation itself, as far as I know, goes something like this:
    [mash water in gallons] + ([pounds of grain] * .08) = Gallons Total Mash Volume

    So for this example of 650 lb grain @ 1.5 qt/lb:
    650 * 1.5 = 975 quarts mash water...
    975 / 4 = 243.75 gallons mash water...
    (243.75) + (650 * .08) = 295.75 Gallons Total Mash Volume
