  • Glycol Loop Cleaning prior to use

    Hi there,

We've nearly finished plumbing the glycol loop in our new facility. In the end we decided to do it in copper, wow, that was fun.

What is the standard procedure for cleaning the inside of these lines before sending glycol thru them...the flux used was 'water soluble' but to me looks like it's gonna need more than water to shift it.

    Any thoughts appreciated.

    Thanks

In for the answer: our plumber just finished our 1-1/4 Copper header, also thinking about flushing it.
We installed a couple of boiler drains at the inlet and outlet near the chiller so we can isolate the header while flushing, and avoid getting crap in the chiller HX

Generally a good water flush is all that is required. If your chiller system has a dedicated pump for the external cooling loop, you can use this pump to recirculate and flush out the system. We'd suggest completely draining the reservoir after a couple hours of circulating, and make certain to wipe or shop vacuum out any filings, debris, etc that could obstruct the chiller HX (as was mentioned in previous post). If your chiller has a single pump, we'd recommend isolating the Chiller evaporator during the flush and prevent fouling. You should have a Y Strainer of some sort installed in the glycol circuit- make certain this is also opened and cleaned completely.

If you need any further help, I'd suggest contacting your chiller system supplier for specific instruction for the system you purchased. We have techs here that would be happy to help further (if you have a Pro Chiller System)- please call 800-845-7782- ask for tech support and have your serial number handy and they'll walk you through the process.
