  • Cooling a jacketed BT in our walk-in?

Hi everyone. We are investing in a 15 BBL brite. Right now, we can't afford a jacketed tank AND the cooling unit, but we're considering getting the jacketed tank now and the cooling unit later, rather than getting a single wall tank that will eventually be obsolete to us. In the meantime we would have to cool our jacketed brite in our walk-in. Our product will be room temp feeding into the brite. Question is -- will be have trouble cooling a jacketed tank in a walk-in simply because it's insulated? Anyone with experience here? I'm getting different stories from different manufacturers. Many thanks!

If the insulation is up to snuff, you'll never be able to cool enough with ambient temperature to keep up with the heat generated by fermentation. We have two tall, skinny 55bbl ferms that stick out through the roof of the brewhouse. When the temps fell well below zero this winter, it didn't affect the ferms at all. Same when the outside temp is over 100F.

Maybe you could hook up the jacketed bright to a small pump, and pump glycol from a small holding tank made from poly, or whatever, through a water/air plenum style heat exchanger, then through the jackets, and back to the small holding tank. A fan could blow air through the HX, cooling your glycol somewhat, or you could position the HX near your existing fan unit, if you can get air flow through it.

It's not going to be super efficient, but it ought to work a ton better than an insulated tank!

On the other hand, with used prices as high as they are these days, you can probably sell a single wall bright for almost what you paid for it.
