    THE BIG PICTURE
    The Director of Hospitality oversees all of Modern Times’ retail properties, including the Pt Loma Fermentorium, North Park Flavordome, DTLA Dankness Dojo, Anaheim Leisuretown, and future locations. In close coordination with the executive management team, this individual works with GM-level direct reports at each property to maximize quality, consistency of product and experience, and the execution of our customer-oriented service strategy. With teams working on the preparation and service of coffee, beer, and food, the Director of Hospitality ensures that all front and back of house teams are working together effectively, communicating efficiently, and are being held accountable for their various tasks. This individual will also work alongside fellow Modern Times Directors to ensure that all operational and financial benchmarks are being met. As part of the management team, the Director of Hospitality will be expected to contribute to our continued growth and expansion initiatives, including the commissioning of new retail sites. Candidates must share Modern Times’ commitments to quality, safety, collaboration, business ethics, and continuous innovation.



    THE EVERYDAY VIEW
    - Oversee the execution at all retail property cafés, tasting rooms, stores, and restaurants
    - Oversee a diverse array of products and teams in coffee, beer, and food service, and continue to push Modern Times forward in new areas of innovation
    - Create an environment that encourages ownership, accountability, and maintains the highest standards of coffee, beer, food, and service
    - Lead, mentor, and manage all retail-related teams with a focus on each property’s leadership team
    - Visit all retail properties regularly, and focus on staff training and retention
    - Work with the teams at each site to ensure quality and consistency standards at met
    - Ensure all standard operating procedures are followed at each site, especially with regard to food and general safety
    - Be held accountable to performance metrics and financial performance of each retail site
    - Be responsible for communication between all retail properties, especially as it relates to ordering and performance
    - Oversee key vendor relationships critical for our kitchens
    - Forecast product needs from other departments and communicate these effectively to fellow Directors
    - Work alongside kitchen managers on new recipe formulation, costing, and execution
    - Help executive management team plan, staff, and open new retail sites
    - Assess general maintenance and upgrade projects at each retail site, giving maximum visibility to costs and timelines whenever possible
    - Work with the sales team to arrange for distributor and retailer visits to properties
    - Represent Modern Times Beer as needed at local and industry events, including beer dinners and account visits
    - Operate in a highly collaborative, 100% ego-free manner with all levels of the organization
    - Adhere to and enforce all applicable local, state and federal laws, rules, and regulations
    - Develop and implement policies, procedures and rules
    - Develop initiatives to build sales, profitability and guest counts
    - In coordination with management teams, be responsible for hiring, scheduling, training, evaluating, and issuing corrective actions for all property personnel, in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws
    - Manage profit and loss analysis statements and labor cost reporting for each property, while anticipating trends and recommending solutions
    - Other tasks as needed


    DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
    - Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application
    - Able to pass a post-offer, pre-employment background check
    - Minimum of 3 years of experience in a similar role
    - Proven knowledge of the retail and service industries
    - A strong understanding of multi-property operations
    - Excellent leadership skills with the proven ability to lead and motivate a team and maintain a positive morale
    - Extensive knowledge of industry compliance standards, including but not limited to OSHA and safety standards, government regulatory programs, and health codes
    - Strong interpersonal skills and a love for meeting and interacting with people
    - Thorough attention to detail and a relentless drive to take initiative
    - The desire to work in a fast-paced, growing company
    - Outstanding professional communication skills, both verbal and written
    - Extremely strong planning and organizational skills with emphasis on financial acumen
    - Strong work ethic and the ability to multi-task, prioritize and adapt to changing situations



    PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
    - Up to 50% travel time may be required to properties outside of San Diego County
    - Able to stand, walk, and be on your feet for prolonged periods
    - Able to read and follow written English instructions
    - Able to regularly twist, turn, kneel, climb, stoop, bend, crawl, lift and carry supplies and equipment weighing up to 55 pounds using appropriate techniques and tools
    - Able to safely navigate the tasting room and snack bar areas, including crowded spaces
    - Able to maneuver packages of any weight above 75 pounds with appropriate equipment and/or assistance
    - Abe to move 165-pounds, using appropriate techniques and tools
    - Able to work in a factory/production environment which may be loud, slick, humid, cold, and hot
    - Able to work in indoor and outdoor environments with moderate noise and occasionally slippery floors
    - Able to comply with and enforce all health, safety, and personal hygiene policies and standards

    ABOUT MODERN TIMES
    Modern Times is a 30bbl production brewery in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. Modern Times is named after a beautifully crazy utopian community founded in 1850, and (almost) all of our beers are named after real utopian experiments or mythological utopias. Today, we're distributed throughout California, Nevada, Arizona, Maui, and select international markets. We operate a tasting room at the brewery, as well as in San Diego’s North Park community. We plan to open new locations in downtown LA & Anaheim in 2017, both featuring brewing facilities, restaurants, specialty coffee shops, and much more radness than we can possibly list here. We brewed our first batch on May 18th, 2013; our beer went on tap for the first time on June 24th 2013; we held the soft opening for the Lomaland Fermentorium tasting room on August 9th, 2013; and our Grand Opening was September 7th, 2013.
