  • Can Seam QA/QC

    Greetings all,

Wanted to get some feedback from those of you who are canning on QA/QC for your can seams. We are eventually looking into a CMC Kuhnke Seam Scan system, but are a ways out from having the funding to do so. I have spoken with our seamer tech and also to some colleagues, as well as done some internet research and it seems as though we can use a micrometer and a vernier caliper to at least have some sort of manual way to check everything in the meantime. Does anyone have any suggestions on which brands to use for each tool/where one might find the best deal for each? Also, if anyone has any documentation they might be willing to share on the subject, it would be more than appreciated!

Here is the best internet link I've found up to this point regarding the topic:

Cask is proud to release these detailed Can Seam Evaluation training videos as an educational resource for the #microcanning community. Proper can seam evaluation is crucial to the successful operation of any canning machines of all speeds. Staying on top of your seam integrity can be easy with the proper attention and correct training. A certified Cask Technician provides seam evaluation training…

    Cheers and thanks!
    Cheers,

We run the CMC Kuhnke, but I always measure with our ole reliable micrometer first. Ours looks similar to this one here.

With canning, it is always a good idea to consult your can supplier. They know their lids inside out and will probably know the optimum accessories kit for you.

        Choices

This subject is much larger and elusive that it might appear on the surface and in practice it becomes very abstract.
My first suggestion is to check out the system made by " Quality By Vision " and avoid CMC Kuhnke.
To say that Kuhnke has a tendency to be misleading would be a large understatement.
While the system is fairly straight forward to set up if you have some computer configuration experience, there is no substitute for hands on instruction which you will not receive unless you ask ahead of time and pay an extra large fee on top of the $18K plus base price of the system.
        Everything happens over the phone.
This leaves wide gaps for things that can be missed or otherwise not perceived correctly.
Interestingly enough while both MFGs have some written guides on Double Seam Troubleshooting, they both miss real world situations that are encountered in the field that come up when using Seamers such as encountered on the Cask ACS 5. If I was employed for either one of these outfits, I would have someone going out in the field and offering live Demos of the gear while doing heavy analysis and recon on trends seen on this type of seaming machinery as its most likely different from what is seen on larger rotary fill systems.

The System from " Quality by Vision " is the same type of Technology and they have a Sister Device called Clearence Guage that can be used to help set up and monitor wear to the Seaming Mechanism, also quite pricey, but a definite advantage in a larger operation.

If you do not have access to a double seam Guru with an inborn knack for the matter and you are going in cold, i can be quite a ride.
With this approach, impeccable record keeping is essential because you are running behind the wear cycle, so its a reactive approach.
This means its has to be done, logged, and watched like a hawk.
