  • Does anyone have experience with VDK distillation?

Our lab is looking in to the possibility of switching from forced d-testing to VDK distillation to start quantifying diacetyl content. The ASBC Beer-25 broad-spectrum method seems like the best option that's within our price range ("Method B" in this paper: http://methods.asbcnet.org/methods/Beer-25.pdf )

Do you have any experience with this method? Any tips for what equipment to buy?

The reagent prices are doable, but I'm hesitant on cheaping-out on a spectrophotometer. There are some durable models going for about $650, or insanely sophisticated UV-Vis units going for $7,000+.

    210 nm?

I don't have access to the ASBC methods anymore but I seem to recall the VDK distillation procedure including a measurement at about 210 nm. Maybe there's a different method now, but if that is the wavelength its measured at, you'll need a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Visible spectrum measurement stop around 450 nm.
