    Organizational Overview
    Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project is a modern artisan brewery with a quality driven focus. We strive to progressively blend science and art through creativity and following our passion. Founded in Denver, Colorado in 2010, the brewery’s artistic creations, most of which use Brettanomyces yeast and mature in oak, result in beers of extraordinary complexity.

    Position Overview
    The Brewhouse and Cellar Manager has an essential role in the brewhouse and both stainless steel and wood vessel cellars and acts as a supporting function to all other aspects of beer production. At its essence this position focuses on management of shift brewers and cellar technicians to ensure quality wort production, optimal fermentation conditions, excellent cellar techniques, and maintaining clean and properly functioning work environments with the ultimate goal of making the greatest beers possible. To accomplish this the Brewhouse and Cellar Manager must be able to manage several employees at once who are focused on different tasks and must be able to frequently troubleshoot/problem solve in a timely manner. The Brewhouse and Cellar Manager should have good communication and conflict resolution skills. The Brewhouse and Cellar Manager’s responsibilities are essential to not only creating but advancing the quality of our beers and the techniques used to make them. Because of this, an optimal candidate must be proficient in brewhouse and cellar engineering, wort production, and fermentation science, and must have good sensory capabilities. As a manager it is crucial to have not only the appropriate technical understanding but also to have the ability to physically perform all duties asked of your employees and to be able to step in to work long shifts and ensure all daily tasks are complete.

    Reporting Relationships
    This position reports to the Production Manager and is an integral part of the production team. This position also collaborates frequently with the entire production team including the Packaging Manager, Quality Manager, and Production Coordinator and is expected to communicate any issues with personnel, equipment, etc. to the appropriate parties right away.



    Essential Roles and Responsibilities
    • Management of Shift Brewers and Cellar Technicians
      • Schedules, payroll, OT, PTO, and sick leave
      • Scheduling and performing monthly one on one’s with the Brewing and Cellar Teams to discuss overall performance and concerns
      • Writing, updating, and training of SOPs

    • Brewhouse Wort Production; Attain a working knowledge required to perform the following job functions with the ability to complete them in the specified length of time.
      • Brew data collection and analysis
      • Grist crush and hop quality checks
      • Grain handling
      • Milling grain
      • Mashing
      • Kettle/wort boil
      • Hopback/Coolship use
      • Knock-out/yeast pitch
      • Cleanup and prep work
      • Proper CIP of the brewhouse

    • Stainless Cellar and Fermentation; Attain a working knowledge required to perform the following job functions with the ability to complete them in the specified length of time.
      • Proper CIP/SIP of stainless fermentation vessels (FVs)
      • Proper CIP and maintenance of wood vessels such as barrels and foeders
      • Management of cellar inventory and barrel project logistics, including tasting beer in process, monitoring progress, and preparing beer for packaging
      • Transferring to and from conicals, foeders, barrels, and bright tanks using methods developed for minimal oxygen ingress and maximum efficiency
      • Dry hopping
      • Collaborate with Quality Manager on the following tasks:

      • Quality measurements taken for each transfer
      • Fermentation monitoring and sensory at each stage
      • Ensuring good yeast practices and health
      • Developing sensory for each beers True-to-Target testing



    • Wood Cellar and Fermentation; Attain a working knowledge required to perform the following job functions with the ability to complete them in the specified length of time.
      • Maintain and manage entire barrel fleet including foeders, wine, whiskey and miscellaneous barrels
      • Maintain strict standards of cleanliness in all barrel facilities and monitor for barrel issues including leaks
      • Manage and plan all barrel-aging projects including bringing in and filling new specialty barrels
      • Manage and train staff to stack and unstack barrels safely
      • Monitoring and routine sensory on barrels to maintain quality standards
      • Barrel coopering and routine barrel maintenance




    Qualification Requirements

    To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential role satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

    Important Skills and Abilities
    • Excellent communication skills, including written, verbal, and non-verbal communications in primary language (English)
    • Strong working knowledge of computers including Internet, Microsoft Office, inventory software, and automation systems. Must be comfortable working with emerging technologies
    • Understand the importance of and proper use of all brewing, cellaring, and quality tools and equipment
    • Good understanding of the positives and challenges of wild yeast and bacteria in brewing
    • Ability to positively represent the organization during both in and out of the brewery during normal work days and at industry events
    • Good water chemistry knowledge
    • Strong understanding of cleaning chemical and usage
    • Strong troubleshooting skills, strong work ethic, and the ability to maintain a great attitude while working within a team or independently
    • An interest in learning and expanding knowledge and skill set along with a willingness to investigate and try new approaches or methodologies



    Qualification Requirements
    • Bachelor’s degree in Fermentation Science, Brewing Science, Engineering, or related technical field of study preferred
    • Five plus years experience in brewery management is highly prefered
    • Previous experience with mechanical systems and troubleshooting problems
    • Inventory management skills preferred
    • Must be 21 years of age or older
    • Love and passion for craft beer is a must!



    Physical Requirements

    • While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to stand for long periods of time, walk up and down stairs repeatedly, and to use a computer and other office equipment
    • Must be physically capable of standing for long periods of time
    • Must be physically capable of using hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear
    • Must be physically capable of lifting and carrying 55+ lbs
    • Must be physically capable of working in small and confined spaces
    • Must be physically capable of working in loud, hot, and cold environments
