  • Peristaltic pump for yeast slurry?

I did some searching for one, and it seems all I could find were tiny dosing pumps. Anyone have a line on something like this--or another appropriate pump for moving yeast slurry from a ferm to a holding tank?

    Timm,

You are just looking to dispose of the yeast as mentioned in your previous post, correct?

It may take some fab work, but how about a open grant like (receiving slurry from your fermenter) with a simple float that triggers a sump pump or other cheap pump meant to move thicker medium...Heck you could just use a simple submersible that has a built in float and put it in a grant like vessal/converted keg thing.

We have a remote trench that dumps into a sump that lifts it 10ft to another trench tied into our brewery drain. I think its no bigger than 2" piping.
Works pretty good as long as we make sure to flush out the sump hole and not leave yeast hop slurry to settle in the pump and piping

Just a thought, might be more work than your looking to do.

      Thanks for the suggestion, Jack.

One of our problems is that we spund to a minor degree of carbonation--not sure just how much, but it's enough that the later yeast foams pretty vigorously. A grant would have to be huge, and a centrifugal pump would likely just cavitate.

We have a big tote sitting over our outside sump/settling tank, with a 3/4" hose going from the tote to the sump. We're currently using old brewery hose to convey the yeast slurry to the tote, where it has a chance to settle down before going into the sump. When we tried dumping directly to the sump, it foamed over.

The problem with this set-up is that it takes too much time to run the hoses and put them away for every yeast dump.

Wouldn't a pneumatic diaphragm pump work for this?

          Small FIP pump?

Would a small flexible impeller pump work? If you need sanitary we have one but you probably don't so you could pick a brass one off of Amazon or a marine store for cheap.
