  • Barrel transport yes or no?

We are considering the option of transporting FULL barrels between our two sites, which are about 10 miles apart, in a van 4 or 5 at a time.

Anyone have any experience with this, i.e. good reasons not to do it? I suppose barrels were made for transport originally but I wonder what kind of risk of bursting there would be.

We've done it in the past. Biggest concern for us was oxygen pickup as the barrels sloshed around. Especially when bringing them back after they'd lost the angel share. Bursting isn't going to be a problem. I'd recommend having fermentation bungs instead of regular bungs in case any CO2 gets released through agitation.

Thanks! The point about sloshing around for the pellicle + O2 is a very good one. I think we'll try to keep them in the same place.
